CONVENT OF THE SACRED HEART SCHOOL

In 2004, she graduated from the Convent of the Sacred Heart, a private girls school near the Guggenheim with a dress code of kilt skirts. “We were good girls, but we weren’t nerdy like the girls at Chapin,” she says. “We were the girls that guys still wanted to date junior year of high school, because we hadn’t had sex or given blow jobs yet.”

Lady Gaga’s Manhattan girls’ school, the elite Convent of the Sacred Heart, was founded by Jewish convert to Catholicism, Otto Kahn, who donated his huge 5th Ave. mansion to a cloistered order in the 1930’s. The school was dedicated to the mission and values of Saints Madeleine Sophie Barat and Phillippine Duschene. Today Sr. Bayo is the only remaining nun and it is apparently not the same Catholic school it once was.

She went to the Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York. Her mother originally was going to enroll her into Juilliard School of Art, but suddenly had a change of heart last minute and enrolled her daughter in the more traditional school.

For being so outrageous, Lady Gaga came from a very conservative background. Convent of the Heart is a very cultured institution, where extremely wealthy parents enroll their children so they can be on the path to success. Not just anyone attends this school. There is a certain status that comes along with attending the school and Lady Gaga’s family now fell into that category, wealthy! Paris and Nicky Hitlon also attended this school.

Lady Gaga recalls the high school prom beinging more like a Ralph Lauren runway show rather than an average prom. Since all the students came from very wealthy families and there was a uniform policy, dances and prom was their only way to really show off their style.

Lady Gaga always puts a lot of emphasis on how really great Convent of the Sacred Heart is. The school really taught her how to think and become an independent self-starter. Lady Gaga said, “I think that my education is what really sets me apart from other artists, because I am really smart. I don’t know that my schooling was condusive to wild ideas and creativity, but it gave me discipline and drive. They taught me how to think—I really know how to think.”

Lady Gaga was a straight-A student who did very well all throughout high school. She considered herself to be an “artsy, musical, theater girl who got good grades who looked a bit too sexy and a bit strange".

She was not considered the most popular girl in high school but she was also not a complete outcast either. Lady Gaga explains that the most popular girls were much more conventional than her.
From the age of 11, Gaga attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, a private all-girls Roman Catholic school on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
